Founded in 1984, the W.O. Smith School is a non-profit organization
that provides high-quality music education to children from low-income
families for 50 cents per lesson. Each year, nearly 400 children
receive music instruction from a 100-member volunteer faculty comprised
of individuals from all segments of the Nashville music community
including studio and symphony musicians, college professors and private
instructors. The school offers instruction in all band and orchestra
instruments, piano, guitar and voice and provides instruments and music
to students at no additional charge.
William Oscar Smith was a professor at Tennessee State University and a
member of the Nashville Symphony Orchestra. He always dreamed of a
school where children from low-income families could have music
instruction of the highest quality made availble to them. This school
is a fulfillment of that dream.
